7. The infinitive mood is governed by !l verb, adjecti ve, 0[' noun.<br />

PARTS OF SYNTAX.<br />

662. The Rules of Syntax may all be referred to<br />

three hc~cls, viz., Concord or agreement, Government,<br />

and Position.<br />

663. CONCORD is the agreement which one word has<br />

with another in gend·,-!', number, case, or person.<br />

664. GOYERNIIIENT is the power which one word has<br />

in determining the mood, tense, or c~se, of another<br />

word. The word goyerned by another word is called<br />

its regimen.<br />

665. POSITION means the place which a word occupies<br />

in relation to other \yords in a sentence.<br />

666. III the English language, which has but few inflections, the mean·<br />

ing of. a sentence often dep('[]ds milch on the position of the words of wbich<br />

it consists. .<br />

RULES OF SYNTAX.<br />

RULE I.-Substantives denoting the same person or<br />

thing agree in c~se; as,<br />

The river Thames. Cicero tbe orator. Paul the apostle. I myself. I<br />

Paul have WI itten it. I Wisdom dwell with prudence. Napoleon the<br />

third (emperor of that name). Ye mcu of Athens. Queen Mary (667, ,\:c.)<br />

RULE 11.-1. An adjectiyc or participle qualifies the<br />

substantive to which it belongs; as,<br />

A good boy; a new book; and old hat; a rough road; a steep hill; a<br />

lofty mouutain; God is good; an amusing story; a man loved by all.<br />

2. Alljectiycs denoting OIlC, qualify nouns in the singular:<br />

adjectives dcnoting more than one, qualify nouns<br />

in the plural; as,<br />

One man; this book; that house; two men; th~se books; those houses;<br />

th~ sixth day; seven days j several weeks; many sorrows; these people<br />

thIS court (676. &e.)
