DIVISION OF VERBS.<br />
325. In respect of form, verbs are divided into Regular,<br />
Irregular, and Defectice.<br />
326. A REGULAR yerb is one that forms its past tense<br />
(415) in the indicative active, and its past participle<br />
(554) by adding ed to the present; as, present, act; past,<br />
acted; past participle, acted.<br />

327. An IRREGULAR ycrb is one that does not form its<br />
past tense in the indicative active, and its past participle,<br />
by adding ed to the pre~cnt; as, present, write; past,<br />
wrote; past participle, 1crittell. ,<br />
328. A DEFE(,TIYE verb is one in which some of the<br />
parts are wanting. To this clas~ belong chiefly, Au:riliary<br />
and Impersonal verbs.<br />
AUXILIARY VERBS.<br />
329. AUXILIARY (or helping) Yerbs are those by the<br />
help of which other verbs arc inflected. They are, do,<br />
have, be i-shall, will i-may, call, must i-and, except<br />
be, they are used only in the present and the past tense;<br />
thus :~<br />
Present. Do, have, shall, will, may, can, must.<br />
Past. Did, had, should, woultI, might, could,<br />
330. Be, do, and have, are also principal verbs, and, as such, beJonO' to<br />
irregular verbs (512). Be is used as an auxiliary in all its parls (354).'"<br />
