SYNTAX.<br />

584. SYNTAX is that part of <strong>grammar</strong> which treats<br />

of the proper arrangement and connection of words in<br />

a sentence.<br />

DEFINITIONS.<br />

585. A SENTENCE is such an assemblage of words as contains an affirm·<br />

ation, and makes complete sense; as, "Man is mortal" (660).<br />

586. A PHRASE is two or more words l'ightly put together, but not con·<br />

taining an nffirruation or making complete sense; as, "In truth"-"ln a<br />

wOTd"-" To say the least."<br />

587. A SUBSTANTIVE PHRASE is one which, in the construction of a sen·<br />

tence, is equivalent to a noun or substantive, being 1. The subject of a<br />

verb; os, .. To do good is to be happy;" 2. The object of a transitive<br />

verb (320, 1); as, "To do good forget not." 3. The object of a preposi·<br />

tion (540); as, "By pursuing this course he succeeded." 4. The attribute<br />

after a copulative verb (604}; as. II He appears to be doing well."<br />

588. An ADJUNCT is a preposition with its regimen (541) as related to<br />

its principal or antecedent term; as, "The waters of Jordan "_" They<br />

came to Jordan."<br />

589. Sentences are of different kinds, according to the nature of the<br />

tl;ought intended to be expressed. They are-<br />

I. Declaratory, 01' Buch as declllre a thing; as, " God is 1000t."<br />

2. Interrogatory, or such as ask a question; as, "Lov8st thou me'"<br />

3. Imperative, or such as express n command; 8S, "Lazarus come forth,"<br />

4. Exclamatory, or such as contain an exclamation; as, "Behold how he<br />

loved him."<br />

591. A simple sentence cODtnins only n single affirmntion; as, "Life iB<br />
