For the same Christ that
said these beautiful words also said. "Of a truth I say un~
to you, This poor widow cast in more than they all: for all
these did of their superfiuity cast in unto the gifts: but
she of her want did cast in all the living that she had."
This commendation was not because the gift was so
large that it would attract attention and cause her to be
an example. No it was because when one gives willingly
of all that they have, it is always given from the
heart; and it was that great-gift of love that the Christ
commended. For the same reason
the Christ commended
the woman who was "a sinner," and who brought "an
alabaster cruse of ointment, and standing behind him at
his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her
tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and
kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment,"
and when his disciples upbraided him for allowing such
a sinful woman to touch him, he said, "Her
sins which
are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom
little is forgiven, the same loveth littIe."
There was no
posing for an example in this case-no hypocrisy.
Nowhere in Christ's teachings does he commend example,
but he calls it by no gentle names, for he called the
the great exemplars of that day-the Pharise es-"hy pocrites,"
and the Scribes, "whited sepulchres."
The reason that the preachers, the Scribes of to-day,
are such hypocrites is that they love to be an example.
There are many things that they would like to do, but
they do them not lest they set a bad example. Likewise
there are many commendable things that they do that
they do not like to do, but they feel compelled to do them
for an example. All such offerings are as filthy rags in
the sight of God, while many, very many, will do things
in privacy that they will not do in public, for fear of
