y _,+,,._ HEN John the Baptist at one time saw Jesus<br />

walking, he- cried: "Behold the Lamb of<br />

fi .= God." At another time he cried: "Behold<br />

?'q"'i"':¥:""i<br />

the Lamb of God, that taketh away the<br />

sin of the world."<br />

The words of the prophet were: "He was led as a lamb<br />

to the slaughter, and as a sheep dumb before her shearers,<br />

so opened he not his mouth." These words imply<br />

that a lamb was symbolic of a condition of willing and<br />

<strong>com</strong>plete surrender; and one phaze of the meaning of the<br />

statement, "the lamb of God," is one who has surrendered<br />

himself wholly to God to obey his word and will<br />

perfectly.<br />

The most prominent part in the Jewish ceremonialism<br />

was played by the sacrificial lamb as a burnt offering.<br />

While the burnt offering was offered at many different<br />

times and at many different places, yet it seems to have<br />

been recognized in a general way that the proper place<br />

for a burnt offering was upon the altar in the Tabernacle<br />

and later, upon the altar in the Temple at Jerusalem.<br />

That the Tabernacle and the Temple were the proper<br />

place to offer a burnt offering was manifested in two<br />

ways, First, the people were admonished: "Take heed<br />

to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt offerings in every<br />

place that thou seest, but in the place which the LORD<br />

shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer<br />

thy burnt offerings."<br />
