F there were no other evidence that the tinte<br />

has arrived fora higher order of life, it<br />

would be suflicient to note the fact that<br />

every quality of mind that has been ac-<br />

;-? tive in the animal and human organism, is<br />

now being brought to ultimations in the various systems<br />

of culture, physical and mental, and the various schools<br />

studying and working on the effect of the mind on the<br />

body; and yet, at best, none of these can do more than<br />

obtain a correct knowledge of the effect of certain mental<br />

states.<br />

Altho it is a truth not yet generally accepted, a little<br />

consideration of the subject must convince us of the fact<br />

that, without the mind, the physical organism is dead;<br />

and we observe at least two spheres of mind active in<br />

control of animal nature,-one finding expression in reptile,<br />

bird, and beast, the other in human life. While<br />

many of us are not prepared to believe that animals<br />

think in the sense that men think, yet we must admit<br />

that they manifest a certain kind of thought. Every<br />

creature works for its own support, and there is undoubted<br />

intelligence shown by the bird in the building of<br />

its nest and caring for its young, by the bee in gathering<br />

honey and providing for the winter, and by the ant<br />

in the exhibition of its colonizing instincts; we are told
