it thruout the ages have lent it.<br />

Again, others find it very easy to tell the truth, if it in<br />

no way implicates one that they love. _'<br />

Those who have a<br />

strong paternal or maternal love will find this true. To<br />

tell the truth when it will severely implicate one that we<br />

love requires a strong character. We often find passages<br />

in the <strong>Bible</strong> where the thought of mercy and truth are<br />

coupled together, and indeed they are for to be truthful<br />

is always to be merciful, altho at times it does not seem<br />

so. For if we lie to shield another, we are only putting<br />

off 'the evil day, when every evil thing and every good<br />

thing will be brought to<br />

light.<br />

Some think it a very easy thing to tell the truth, but<br />

on the contrary, it often takes very great wisdom.<br />

tell every thing that we know is not always telling the<br />

truth.<br />

For in sodoing we often mislead people more<br />

than if we kept silent.<br />

Those who have knowledge and do not impart it at the<br />

right time or place but keep quiet when duty calls them<br />

to speak, lie, and cause others to suffer as much as if they<br />

had voiced an untruth.<br />

Suspicion, imagining evil of our fellows, is often the<br />

worst kind of untruth; especially is this the case if indulged<br />

in concerning one who has started on the path;<br />

for those who have been awakened by the Spirit are<br />

more sensitive and are more easily affected by thoughts<br />

of discredit directed toward them.<br />

Again, we hear people making distinctions as to the<br />

quality of lies; they call some white lies and some black<br />

lies; but we fail to find any such distinction 'in Holy Writ.<br />

And if those who make such distinction will analyze their<br />

thoughts carefully, they will find that the lies that they<br />

themselves tell, they are apt to regard as white; while<br />

the ones that theirneighbor tells, they are likely to regard<br />
