pose. Otherwise one's condition in life<br />

will be similar to that of a ship sailing the ocean without<br />

any particular destination, driven before every wind,<br />

harassed by every circumstance without end, except destruction.<br />

But this purpose in life must not only be definite, it<br />

must also accord with the general trend of things; from<br />

lower to higher,<br />

from general to particular, from abstract<br />

to concrete.<br />

It is obvious that a telephone, a lo<strong>com</strong>otive,<br />

a tram car, etc., are all made for a definite use,<br />

or with a purpose in view. Surely it is a fair deduction<br />

that man, who is infinitely more <strong>com</strong>plex in construction<br />

than any of these, must have a definite use or purpose<br />

too in the scheme of things.<br />

With the exception of the Natural Forces, the man in<br />

the street knows nothing definitely that is superior to<br />

man, who is borne on the wings of the wind, carried on<br />

the bosom of the waters over the trackless seas, and<br />

who converses with his friends over hundreds of miles<br />

of space.<br />

By his mental powers<br />

man has asserted his<br />

dominion over the physical to a large and increasing extent,<br />

and has proved himself to be a creator, and in<br />

very truth he is and was intended to be.<br />
