kernels. We also plan to examine the relationship
between carbohydrate storage and movement
within the plant and nitrogen fixation, again in
order to select plants for use in a breeding
program for increased nitrogen fixation and
hopefully yield. The effect of drought stress on
nitrogen fixation will be examined in more detail
to characterize differences between lines at various
growth stages. We plan to survey the major
groundnut-growing areas in order to determine
patterns of nodulation in groundnuts growing in
the field.
By 1978, we hope to initiate cytogenetics and
physiology programs. In the physiology project,
the major study will be on locating sources of
drought resistance in groundnuts.
