finger millet (Eleusine coracana), and foxtail millet
(Setaria italica). ICRISAT expects in the future to
make major contributions to the collection, description,
preservation, and distribution of these genetic
resources. The intention is to complement the work of
national genetic resources programs and to provide a
service to them and to plant breeders throughout the
world. This new initiative will require new programs,
staff, and facilities in the future.
After several years of testing, we are growing confident
that farming systems technologies developed at
ICRISAT may enable much more effective use of the
deep Vertisols of India during the rainy season.
As ICRISA T's crop-improvement programs grow, thousands of seed samples are shipped to and
received from all areas of the world. To prevent accidental introduction of dangerous plant pathogens
or other pests and to reduce the amount of time required for quarantine clearance, close cooperation
between ICRISAT scientists and quarantine officials of the Government of India is essential. Both
parties are working very hard to achieve a rapid and safe flow of material through import and export
channels.
