So in the application of the D type flip flop as a shift register, this is used to store number of bits which are entered into the register (or group of flip flops) in a serial fashion. Data is presented a bit at a time to input D of flip flop 1. After a clock pulse the data at D2 appears at output 2. Whilst the new data which had been at D1 is now at Q 1 (or output 1). This process is repeated until this initial register is full. The data is transferred out in parallel from outputs 1 to 4 for DAC operation.
