3.1 Neural concepts<br />

For many years algorithms have been sought to simulate the visual processing of the<br />

human brain. The brain contains up to 100 billion processing units called neurons,<br />

each having a switching delay of several milliseconds. The fast reaction of the brain<br />

is achieved by massive parallel processing; due to the networking of these neurons,<br />

i.e. massive interconnection. The basic component parts of a neuron are the axon –<br />

signal output, the synapse – the interface between the axon of one neuron and the<br />

input to the dendrites (thread like connections to the body of the neuron) of the next,<br />

and of course the body (soma) itself. (See Figure: Biological neuron)<br />
