Chapter 2 Early directions
Initially investigations were commenced utilising the MATLAB application software
package as a cost effective precursor prior to a hardware oriented approach. Initial
investigations involved a sub-retinal approach utilising the neural network toolbox
supplied within the MATLAB software. Research into the application of Artificial
Neural Network (ANN) when dealing with `spikes’ [75, 130-141]; as a form of
neuromorphic communication, informed its suitability for this purpose.
2.1 Introduction to initially envisaged project
The approach would be to replace damaged parts of the retina, prior to the rods and
cones, with a neural network artificial retina to fulfil the function of the amacrine,
horizontal and bipolar cells[46].
