CORRIDOR RAIL LINES<br />

Corridor 1: Omaha-Lincoln-York-Grand Island-Kearney<br />

Amtrak operates its California Zephyr intercity service daily through this corridor. Stops are at<br />

Omaha, Lincoln and Hastings.<br />

The specifics <strong>of</strong> the rail lines in the corridor are as shown in Table 2-4. The rail route includes<br />

BNSF from Omaha to Grand Island, and UP from Grand Island to Kearney. BNSF reported that<br />

its traffic between Omaha and Lincoln will be significantly heavier in 2004. The railroad will<br />

run new empty coal trains on the line. These will push volume between Omaha and Ashland<br />

from 4 through trains to between 10 and 12 per day, and between Ashland and Lincoln from 40<br />

through trains to between 55 and 60 trains per day.<br />

There is no passenger rail service in this corridor. Specifics <strong>of</strong> the rail corridor appear below.<br />

The route consists <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Nebraska</strong> Central Rail Corporation (NCRC), a short line or small<br />

railroad, between Norfolk and Columbus, and the Union Pacific between Columbus, Fremont<br />

and Omaha.<br />
