Language and culture notes
Use of àgbo
àgbo is a traditional medicinal drink that contains many different
kinds of medicinal leaves and roots. The leaves and roots for making
àgbo are commonly sold at the open markets. There is hardly any
sickness or illness that one type of àgbo or another cannot be
prescribed for. In most cases, the àgbo can be very bitter, but those
who believe in its medicinal power are willing to drink it anytime
they are sick. It is used by both young and old.
Exercise 1
You meet your friend on the way home from work. He does not look
well. Ask him the following questions.
1 Are you okay?
2 What is wrong with your body?
Exercise 2
You are the friend in Exercise 1: tell your friend that you have the
following sickness. The first one has been done for you.
Example:
1 Your leg hurts.
ÕsõΩn; dùn mí.
2 Your eyes ache.
3 Your stomach aches.
4 Your shoulder hurts.
