Question form kí
$
The “wh”-question “what” is formed by using the word kí, as in:
a Kí l’orúko≥õ?
What is your name?
b Kí l’o jõ lánàá?
What did you eat yesterday?
c Kí l’o fõœ? What do you want?
To respond to the above questions, you can say:
a Orúko≥mi ni Kúnlé. My name is Kunle.
b Mo jõ búrõœdì lánàá. I ate bread yesterday.
c Mo fõœ o≥koΩtuntun. I want a new car.
How to say “where are you from?”
The way to ask about people’s nationality is by using the following
question forms:
O˘mo≥ìlú ibo ni õœ?
—O˘mo≥ìlú Nàìjíríyà ni mi.
O˘mo≥ìlú ibo ni Kim?
—O˘mo≥ìlú Amõœríkà ni.
Where are you from?
—I am from Nigeria.
Where is Kim from?
—She is from the U.S.A.
O˘mo≥ìlú ibo ni Toœ$põœ àti TáyoΩ$? Where are To≥põ and Tayo≥from?
—O˘mo≥ìlú Benin ni woœ$n. —They are from Benin.
Note: It is also all right to use orílõΩ-èdè instead of ìlú for a country.
Some people use ìlú to mean both country or city.
Notice that the verb ni “to be” could be “is” or “are” depending on
whether the subject noun is singular or plural. Similarly, the same
verb could also be “is” or “was” or “are” or “were” depending on
whether past tense interpretation is implied or not. For example:
Orúko≥mi ni Kúnlé.
My name is Kunle.
