Independent pronouns
Independent pronouns are pronouns that function like regular
nouns. They resemble pronouns because they have a system of
number and of person but they behave like nouns. The independent
pronouns are:
èmi I àwa we
ìwo≥ you (sing.) õΩyin you (pl.)
òun he/she/it àwo≥n they
They behave like nouns in many different ways:
1 They take modifiers while regular pronouns do not.
Ìwo≥oΩ$dàlõΩ!
You traitor!
Èmi àko≥ni
I, the brave
ìwo≥náà
you too
òun alára
he himself
2 They take question markers such as dà and n;koœ$.
Ìwo≥dà?
Where are you?
Èyin n;koœ$? How about you (pl.)?
3 They take the verb ni when regular pronouns cannot. For
example:
ìwo≥ni
it is you
àwo≥n ni
it is they
4 They take conjunctions while regular pronouns do not. For
example:
èmi àti òun she and I
èmi tàbí òun she or I
