Negative commands
To give a command in Yoruba, use the verb alone without the
subject pronoun if you are giving the command to one person who
is younger than you. For example:
Dìde!
Jókòó!
Wá n;bí!
Kúrò n;bí!
Stand up!
Sit down!
Come here!
Leave!
If the command is for an older person or more than one person,
however, you should use the second person singular subject pronoun,
Õ, in addition to the verb. For example:
Õ dìde!
Õ jókòó!
Õ wá n;bí!
You (honorific or pl.) stand up!
You (honorific or pl.) sit down!
You (honorific or pl.) come here!
To negate the above commands, simply add má before the verb. For
example:
Má dìde!
Má jókòó!
Má bínú!
Má kúrò n;bí!
Don’t stand up!
Don’t sit down!
Don’t be upset!
Don’t leave!
The same má is used for giving a command to an older person or to
more than one person. For example:
Õ má dìde!
Õ má jókòó!
Õ má bínú!
jìjo≥ together
kí i
to visit her
loœ$la tomorrow
bóyá maybe
You (honorific or pl.) don’t stand up!
You (honorific or pl.) don’t sit down!
You (honorific or pl.) don’t be upset!
