As mentioned in Unit 2, the word n; can have either a present or past<br />

interpretation depending on the context. For example:<br />

Mo n;jõun nísisìyí.<br />

I am eating now.<br />

Mo n;jõun nígbà tí Olú wo≥lé.<br />

I was eating when Olu came in.<br />

Adé n;gbálõΩloœ$woœ$loœ$wo.œ$<br />

Ade is sweeping the floor right now.<br />

Nígbà tí mo rí Adé, ó n;gbálõΩ.<br />

When I saw Ade, he was sweeping the floor.<br />

Mo n;dúró de oúnjõ rõ.<br />

I am waiting for your food.<br />

Kimberly n;gbé ní Ìbàdàn.<br />

Kimberly is living (lives) in Ibadan.<br />

The word n; is usually dropped after the negative marker kò. For<br />

example:<br />

Mo n;ko≥rin.<br />

I am singing.<br />

N kò ko≥rin.<br />

I am not singing.<br />

Olú n;jó.<br />

Olu is dancing.<br />

Olú kò jó.<br />

Olu is not dancing.<br />

Màmá mi n;fo≥ßo≥. My mother is washing clothes.<br />

Màmá mi kò fo≥ßo≥. My mother is not washing clothes.<br />

In the list of expression of feelings above, notice that the word n; is<br />

used to indicate present feelings. Below are different ways the tenses<br />

can change when expressing feelings.<br />

Ebi n; pa mí nísisìyí. I am hungry now.<br />

Ebi kò pa mí nísisìyí. I am not hungry now.<br />

Ebi pa mí lánàá. I was hungry yesterday.<br />

Ebi kò pa mí lánàá. I was not hungry yesterday.
