A: Màmá n;koœ$? How is your mother?
B: Woœ$n wà. She (honorific) is fine.
A: Àwo≥n àbúrò n;koœ$? How are your younger siblings?
B: Woœ$n wà. They are fine.
A: Dúpõœ àti Déo≥lá n;koœ$? How are Dupe and Deo≥la?
B: Woœ$n wà. They are fine.
The use of àwọn
Any time àwo≥n is used with a noun, it usually implies plural. àwo≥n
always comes before the noun that it modifies. For example:
$ $
ilé house àwo≥n ilé houses
o≥koΩ vehicle àwo≥n o≥koΩ vehicles
Using Ó péjó. mé.ta/ọjó. kan pè.lú
Ó péjoœ$ mõœta is used for someone you have not seen for a long time.
It literally means “it is up to three days (that we have not met).” In
traditional Yoruba life, three days is a long time for Yoruba people
not to see one another. The response, o≥joœ$ kan põΩlú, literally means
“one day more,” and so the response is saying “it is actually more
than three days.” The implication here is that it truly has been a long
time since you saw one another.
Exercise 6
Greet your friend and find out about the following. The first one has
been done for you.
Example:
1 Health
Báwo ni? Íé àlàáfíà ni?)
2 Household
3 Work
4 Younger siblings
5 Father
6 Mother
