Õ so≥pé kí Kúnlé jõun.
You said that Kunle should eat.
Other examples of how the word kí is used are:
Jõœ kí a so≥Yorùbá.
Jõœ kí ó kàwé rõΩ.
Let us speak Yoruba.
Let him read his book.
Olú kò jõœ kí o sùn.
Olu did not let you sleep.
N kò jõœ kí woœ$n simi. I did not let them rest.
Notice that in all the examples, Yoruba uses subject pronouns after
kí when the translation in English produces object pronouns.
jõœ kí a let us
| | |
let that we
jõœ kí woœ$n let them
| | |
let that they
jõœ kí N let me
| | |
let that I
If you want to tell an older person or more than one person to let
you or someone do something, you should add õ to jõœ kí. For
example:
Õ jõœ kí a jõun.
You (pl.), let us eat.
Õ jõœ kí gbogbo wá jõun. You (pl.), let all of us eat.
Õ jõœ kí woœ$n sùn. You (pl.), let them sleep.
With regard to the pronoun mo, notice that it changes to N when it
occurs after kí. For example:
mo fõœ sùn I want to sleep
| | |
I want sleep
n kò fõœ sùn I don’t want to sleep
| | |
I neg. want sleep
