French Immersion Programme - At Sir James Dunn, you can earn a Bilingual Cerficate by successfully compleng 13<br />

Advanced Placement (AP)<br />
In <strong>2008</strong>-<strong>09</strong> Sir James Dunn will offer the French Language Advanced Placement (AP) course as an extension of the<br />
current Core French and French immersion programs. The Advance Placement program is a cooperave effort between<br />
secondary schools and universies that allows high school students to receive credit in university level courses while<br />
sll in high school. It will provide an excellent enrichment opportunity for those students interested in extending their<br />
second language experience. The majority of the curriculum covered in the AP examinaon is currently covered in our<br />
courses. To prepare for the AP designaon students will cover addional material through independent study and/or<br />
teacher led study groups. Students will write an examinaon at the end of the program. Students who successfully<br />
complete the examinaon with a Level 4 or 5 will receive advanced placement and/or credit in the subject at many<br />

OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM<br />
Sir James Dunn is pleased to host the new ADSB (Central) Outdoor Educaon Program. This is an engaging and excing<br />
new iniave. Students will have the opportunity to parcipate in a flexible outdoor educaon program while earning 3-<br />
4 compulsory credits in each of two semesters. The program is designed to provide an alternave educaonal experience<br />
for students who are disengaged from their current school experience. Students will parcipate in program curriculum<br />
that will be integrated with hands-on outdoor acvies.<br />
Students enrolled in this program may earn credits in CGT3 (The Geographer’s Toolkit), PPZ3 (Health for Life), IDC3<br />
(Outdoor Skills) and CGR4 (Environmental Geography). Expectaons for the Health for Life course will be met through<br />
hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and drugs/alcohol/mental health educaon. The Geographer’s<br />
Toolkit expectaons will be met though GPS and GIS training, and compass and map reading. The Outdoor Skills<br />
course will focus on weather and climate studies, shelter making, fire starng, outdoor cooking and outdoor safety.<br />
Environmental Geography focuses on the impact of human acvity on the natural environment. In addion, during in<br />
class sessions, students will work towards achieving compulsory credits in English, Mathemacs, History, Geography and/<br />
or Science. The program uses a wide range of sites and resources available in the “Naturally Gied” Sault Ste Marie and<br />
surrounding area as the classroom.<br />
Admission to this program is based on a referral from the student’s home school, credit history and an intake interview<br />
with the student and parent. Student interest and parent/guardian support are important to success in this program.<br />
