Science, Grade 12, University/College Preparaon (SNC4M)
This course enables students, including those who do not intend to pursue science-related programs at the postsecondary level, to
further develop their understanding of science and its technological applicaons. Students will explore a range of topics, including
organic products in everyday life; pathogens and disease; energy alternaves and their impact globally; communicaons systems;
and science and contemporary societal issues. Emphasis will be placed on relang these topics to global issues as well as to daily life,
and on developing skills in the areas of experimentaon, research, crical thinking, and analysis. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 11,
University/College Preparaon Hornepayne only.
Chemistry, Grade 12, College Preparaon (SCH4C)
This course introduces students to the concepts that form the basis of modern chemistry. Students will study qualitave analysis,
quantave relaonships in chemical reacons, organic chemistry and electrochemistry, and chemistry as it relates to the quality
of the environment. Students will employ a variety of laboratory techniques, develop skills in data collecon and scienfic analysis,
and communicate scienfic informaon using appropriate terminology. Emphasis will be placed on the role of chemistry in daily life
and in the development of new technologies and products. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic or Applied Bawang, CASS,
Chapleau, Elliot Lake, Korah, Michipicoten, SJD, WC Eaket and White Pines only
Chemistry, Grade 12, University Preparaon (SCH4U)
This course enables students to deepen their understanding of chemistry through the study of organic chemistry, energy changes
and rates of reacon, chemical systems and equilibrium, electrochemistry, and atomic and molecular structure. Students will
further develop problem-solving and laboratory skills as they invesgate chemical processes, at the same me refining their ability
to communicate scienfic informaon. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of chemistry in daily life, and on evaluang
the impact of chemical technology on the environment. Prerequisite: Chemistry, Grade 11, University Preparaon All schools
but Alexander Henry and Hornepayne. Also offered as part of the French Immersion Program at SJD. Offered at alternate years in
Hornepayne.
Physics, Grade 12, University Preparaon (SPH4U)
This course enables students to deepen their understanding of the concepts and theories of physics. Students will explore further
the laws of dynamics and energy transformaons, and will invesgate electrical, gravitaonal, and magnec fields; electromagnec
radiaon; and the interface between energy and maer. They will further develop inquiry skills, learning, for example, how the
interpretaon of experimental data can provide indirect evidence to support the development of a scienfic model. Students will
also consider the impact on society and the environment of technological applicaons of physics.
Prerequisite: Physics, Grade 11, University Preparaon Bawang, CASS, Chapleau, Elliot Lake, Hornepayne, Korah, Michipicoten, SJD,
WC Eaket and White Pines only. Offered as part of the French Immersion Program at SJD.
Physics, Grade 12, College Preparaon (SPH4C)
This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore these concepts as they relate
to mechanical, electrical, fluid (hydraulic and pneumac), and communicaons systems, as well as to the operaon of commonly
used tools and equipment. They will develop scienfic-inquiry skills as they verify accepted laws of physics and solve both assigned
problems and those emerging from their invesgaons. Students will also consider the impact of technological applicaons
of physics on society and the environment. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic or Applied CASS, Chapleau, Elliot Lake,
Hornepayne, Korah, Michipicoten, SJD, WC Eaket, and White Pines only
Food and Nutrional Sciences Grade 12 University/College Preparaon (HFA4M)
This course examines various nutrional, psychological, social, cultural, and global factors that influence people’s food choices and
customs. Students will learn about current Canadian and worldwide issues related to food, frameworks for making appropriate
dietary choices, and food-preparaon techniques. This course also refines students’ skills used in researching and invesgang issues
related to food and nutrion. Prerequisite: any University or University/College course in Social Sciences and Humanies, English, or
