Community Involvement Requirements and Procedures<br />

Students must complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement acvies during their years in the secondary school<br />

program. This requirement is to be completed outside the student’s normal instruconal hours and in a variety of sengs. Students<br />

may not complete the hours through acvies that are counted towards a credit, through paid work or by assuming dues normally<br />

performed by a paid employee.<br />

Parents and students play a major role in this iniave. Organizaons or persons supervising the acvies must confirm compleon<br />

of the 40 hours. Documentaon aesng to the compleon of each acvity must be submied. This documentaon must<br />

include for each acvity, the name of the person or organizaon receiving the service, the acvity performed, the dates and hours,<br />

signatures of the student and his or her parents and a signed acknowledgement by the person (or representave of the organizaon)<br />

involved. More details on community involvement requirements and procedures are available from the school.<br />

Provincial Secondary <strong>School</strong> Literacy Test<br />

All students who entered Grade 9 in the 2000 - 2001 school year, or in subsequent years, must successfully complete the provincial<br />

secondary school literacy test in order to earn a secondary school diploma. Students will normally be administered the literacy<br />

test when they are in Grade 10. The test is based on Ontario curriculum expectaons for language and communicaon, parcularly<br />

reading and wring, up to and including Grade 9.<br />

The test will idenfy areas for remediaon for students who are unsuccessful in compleng the test. Students who write the test but<br />

do not succeed must re-take the test and complete it successfully in order to qualify for a secondary school diploma. There is no limit<br />

to the number of mes the test may be re-taken.<br />

Accommodaons<br />

Students who are receiving special educaon programs and services and who have an Individual Educaon Plan may receive the<br />

accommodaons that are set out in the students’ IEP.<br />

Deferrals<br />

Only students who might benefit from a deferral of the test should be considered. This may include students who have been<br />

idenfied as exceponal and students registered in English as a second language/English literacy development courses who have not<br />

yet acquired the level of proficiency in English required for successfully compleng the test. The Principal determines if a deferral<br />

should be granted and the me period for the deferral.<br />

Exempons<br />

Students whose IEP indicates that the student is not working towards the aainment of a secondary school diploma may, with<br />

parental consent and approval of the Principal, be exempted from parcipang in the literacy test.<br />

Ontario Secondary <strong>School</strong> Literacy Course<br />

Students may also achieve the literacy requirement through the Ontario Secondary <strong>School</strong> Literacy Course. Refer to the course<br />

descripon in the Grade 12 English secon.<br />

Adjudicaon<br />

At the end of each school year, Directors of Educaon establish an Adjudicaon Panel to provide a select group of students an<br />

addional opportunity to meet the graduaon literacy requirement. This group of students includes those who would otherwise be<br />

eligible to graduate in June but, through no fault of their own, have not been able to take advantage of the normal opportunies to<br />

write the Ontario Secondary <strong>School</strong> Literacy Test (OSSLT) and/or have not been able to enrol in or complete OSSLC due to unforeseen<br />

circumstances. Also eligible are students who were receiving special educaon programs or services, and had an Individual<br />

Educaon Plan (IEP) documenng required accommodaons that due to unforeseen circumstances were not available when they<br />

were taking the OSSLT. Contact the Principal for further informaon.<br />
