Biology, Grade 11 University Preparaon (SBI3U)
This course furthers students’ understanding of the processes involved in biological systems. Students will study cellular funcons,
genec connuity, internal systems and regulaon, the diversity of living things, and the anatomy, growth, and funcons of
plants. The course focuses on the theorecal aspects of the topics under study, and helps students refine skills related to scienfic
invesgaon. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic
All schools except Alexander Henry. Also offered as part of the French Immersion Program at SJD.
Chemistry, Grade 11 University Preparaon (SCH3U)
This course focuses on the concepts and theories that form the basis of modern chemistry. Students will study the behaviours of
solids, liquids, gases, and soluons; invesgate changes and relaonships in chemical systems; and explore how chemistry is used in
developing new products and processes that affect our lives and our environment. Emphasis will also be placed on the importance of
chemistry in other branches of science. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic All schools except Alexander Henry. Also offered
as part of the French Immersion Program at SJD. Offered at alternate years in Hornepayne.
Science, Grade 11, Workplace Preparaon (SNC3E)
This course provides students with the science-related knowledge and skills they need to help them make informed decisions in the
workplace and in their personal lives. Students will explore a range of topics, including materials and safety; electrical circuits; microorganisms;
the human immune system and defences against disease; and the impact of humans on the environment. Emphasis is
placed on relang these topics directly to students’ experiences both in the world of work and in daily life. Prerequisite: Science,
Grade 9, Academic or Applied Alexander Henry, Bawang, CASS, WC Eaket, and Elliot Lake only.
Science, Grade 11, University/College Preparaon (SNC3M)
This course enables students, including those who do not intend to pursue science-related programs at the postsecondary level, to
increase their understanding of science and its technological applicaons. Students will explore a range of topics, including the safe
use of everyday chemicals; the science of nutrion and body funcon; waste management; the applicaon of scienfic principles in
space; and technologies in everyday life. Emphasis will be placed on the role of science and technology in daily life and in relaon to
social and environmental issues. Prerequisite: Science, Grade 10, Academic or Applied Hornepayne only.
Physics, Grade 11 University Preparaon (SPH3U)
This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will study the laws of dynamics and explore
different kinds of forces, the quanficaon and forms of energy (mechanical, sound, light, thermal, and electrical), and the way
energy is transformed and transmied. They will develop scienfic-inquiry skills as they verify accepted laws and solve both assigned
problems and those emerging from their invesgaons. Students will also analyse the interrelaonships between physics and
technology, and consider the impact of technological applicaons of physics on society and the environment Prerequisite: Science,
Grade 10, Academic All schools except Alexander Henry and Hornepayne. Also offered as part of the French Immersion Program at
SJD.
Managing Personal Resources, Grade 11 Workplace Preparaon (HIP3E)
This course prepares students for living independently and working successfully with others. Students will learn to manage their
personal resources (including talent, money, and me), to develop interpersonal skills, and to understand economic influences on
workplace issues, in order to make wise and responsible personal and occupaonal choices. The course emphasizes the achievement
of expectaons through praccal experiences and introduces students to skills used in researching and invesgang resource
management. Prerequisite: None Elliot Lake only
Managing Personal and Family Resources, Grade 11 College Preparaon (HIR3C)
This course explores how to use human, material, and community resources effecvely, and how to make informed choices with
respect to clothing purchases, finance, food and nutrion, housing, and transportaon. Students will learn about the dynamics of
human interacon; how to make responsible choices in their transion to postsecondary educaon and careers; and strategies to
enable them to manage me, talent, and money effecvely. This course also introduces students to skills used in researching and
invesgang resource management. Prerequisite: None Bawang, Korah, SJD, and White Pines only
