Communicaon in the World of Business and Technology, Grade 12, Open (EBT4O)<br />

This course emphasizes praccal wring and communicaon skills that are needed in the<br />

world of business and technology. Students will analyse the characteriscs of effecve models of business and technical<br />

communicaons; gather informaon to write reports, business leers, memos, manuals, instrucons, and brochures; and integrate<br />

graphics and text, using technology appropriately for formang and special effects. They will also make a number of oral and visual<br />

presentaons. Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, University Preparaon, College Preparaon, or Workplace Preparaon WC Eaket only<br />

Studies in Literature, Grade 12, College Preparaon (ETS4C)<br />

This course is for students with a special interest in literature. The course may focus on<br />

themes, genres, me periods, or countries. Students will study a variety of forms and stylisc elements of literary texts and respond<br />

personally, crically, and creavely to them. They will also invesgate crical interpretaons and complete an independent study<br />

project. Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, College Preparaon Michipicoten only<br />

Studies in Literature, Grade 12, University Preparaon (ETS4U)<br />

This course is for students with a special interest in literature and literary cricism. The course may focus on themes, genres, me<br />

periods, or countries. Students will analyse a range of forms and stylisc elements of literary texts and respond personally, crically,<br />

and creavely to them. They will also assess crical interpretaons, write analycal essays, and complete an independent study<br />

project. Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, University Preparaon Michipicoten and SJD only<br />

The Writer’s Cra, Grade 12, University Preparaon (EWC4U)<br />

This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the cra of wring. Students will<br />

analyse models of effecve wring; use a workshop approach to produce a range of works; idenfy and use techniques required for<br />

specialized forms of wring; and idenfy effecve ways to improve the quality of their wring. They will also complete a major paper<br />

as part of a creave or analycal independent study project and invesgate opportunies for publicaon and for wring careers.<br />

Prerequisite: English, Grade 11, University Preparaon CASS, Elliot Lake, Korah, SJD, WC Eaket (e-learning), and White Pines only<br />

Ontario Secondary <strong>School</strong> Literacy Course (OLC4O)<br />

This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario<br />

Secondary <strong>School</strong> Literacy Test. Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for<br />

graduaon. Students will read a variety of informaonal, narrave, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of wring,<br />

including summaries, informaon paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a literacy<br />

porolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their wring.<br />

Students who have been eligible to write the Ontario Secondary <strong>School</strong> Literacy Test (OSSLT) at least twice, and have been<br />

unsuccessful at least once, are eligible to take this course to achieve both a Grade 12 credit and their literacy credenal for<br />

graduaon or on Principal’s recommendaon. All schools<br />

Core French, Grade 12, University Preparaon (FSF4U)<br />

This course draws on a variety of themes to promote extensive development of French- language skills. Students will consolidate<br />

their oral skills as they discuss literature, culture, and current issues. They will read a variety of texts and will write a formal essay.<br />

The use of correct grammar and appropriate language convenons in both spoken and wrien French will be emphasized throughout<br />

the course. Prerequisite: Core French, Grade 11, University Preparaon Bawang, CASS, Chapleau, Korah, Michipicoten, SJD, WC<br />

Eaket, and White Pines only<br />

* At SJD this course will include acvies designed to prepare students to write the Advanced Placement (AP) examinaon in French.<br />

French Immersion, Grade 12, University Preparaon (FIF4U)<br />

This course provides for extensive study of French literature and culture from the Middle Ages to the present. Students will study<br />

novels, plays, poems, films, and non-ficon works produced in various historical periods, and will write a formal research paper. The<br />

use of correct grammar and appropriate language convenons in both spoken and wrien French will be emphasized throughout the<br />

course. Prerequisite: French Immersion, Grade 11, University Preparaon. Offered as part of the French Immersion Program at SJD,<br />

Elliot Lake, and Chapleau. * At SJD this course will include acvies designed to prepare students to write the Advanced Placement<br />

(AP) examinaon in French.<br />
