Introduction<br />
This course calendar contains General Informaon about the <strong>Algoma</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Board</strong> secondary schools and their<br />
services. It also contains informaon and requirements for students who enter secondary school in, or aer, September,<br />
1999.<br />
<strong>School</strong> opon sheets outline what courses are offered at each school. Students should note that course offerings are<br />
subject to enrolment. Specialized school focuses are outlined in the Specialized Programs secon. Addional details may<br />
be obtained from each school.<br />
The selecon of courses and programs in secondary school depends on a partnership among students, parents, and the<br />
school. This course calendar will assist students and parents in making those important course and program selecons.<br />
It is important to emphasize, however, that the course calendar is not the only source of informaon. The schools’<br />
teachers, Guidance Counsellors and administrators can provide valuable assistance in all maers related to course<br />
selecon, program and career planning. Students and parents are encouraged to seek advice and assistance from those<br />
professionals.<br />
Students who will be in Grade 9, 10, 11, or 12 as of September, 2007 will be subject to the Ontario Secondary <strong>School</strong><br />
diploma requirements. More details can be found in Ontario Secondary <strong>School</strong>s: Grades 9-12. Program and Diploma<br />

Overall Goals and Philosophy<br />
The Ontario secondary school program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills they will need to lead<br />
sasfying and producve lives in the twenty-first century. The program will help prepare students for further educaon<br />
and work, and assist them to become independent, producve, and responsible members of society.<br />
The schools within the <strong>Algoma</strong> <strong>District</strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Board</strong> offer an educaon program that promotes a high standard of<br />
achievement, provides all students with learning opportunies and support, and is relevant to society’s needs and<br />
expectaons. Courses are offered in ways intended to ensure that educaon is relevant, both to students’ needs and<br />
interests, and to postsecondary instuons and employers’ requirements.<br />
In Grades 9 and 10, courses strongly promote the acquision of essenal knowledge and skills by all students. Students<br />
are encouraged to focus on their areas of strength and interest and to explore various areas of study. In Grades 11 and<br />
12, the program is designed to allow all students to choose courses that are clearly and directly linked to their intended<br />
postsecondary desnaons.<br />
Connuing Educaon programs are available at several sites throughout the <strong>Board</strong>. As well, a number of other programs<br />
to serve the special needs of small groups of exceponal students are available throughout the <strong>Board</strong>. Further details<br />
about any program are available at each secondary school.<br />
