Science, Grade 9 Academic (SNC1D) This course enables students to understand basic concepts in biology, chemistry, earth and space science, and physics; to develop skills in the processes of scienfic inquiry; and to relate science to technology, society, and the environment. Students will learn scienfic theories and conduct invesgaons related to cell division and reproducon; atomic and molecular structures and the properes of elements and compounds; the universe and space exploraon; and the principles of electricity. All schools except Alexander Henry. Also offered as part of the French Immersion Program at SJD. Technological Education ______________________________________________________________ Integrated Technologies, Grade 9 Open (TTI1O) This course enables students to understand the technological and computer concepts they will need in order to design, develop, and build usable products or to deliver services, as well as to pursue further technological studies. Students will use the technological design process and a variety of tools and soware to solve problems, complete projects, and strengthen their communicaon skills. Grade 10 Arts ______________________________________________________________ Dance, Grade 10, Open (ATC2O) This course requires students to develop their dance skills and learn the theorecal basis for working with anatomical structure in execung dance movements. Student learning will include the processes that form the basis for creang dance; the historical development of dance; students’ own aesthec appreciaon of dance as they parcipate in dance class, rehearsals, and performances; and the specialized vocabulary of dance cricism. Bawang, CASS and White Pines only. Dramac Arts, Grade 10 Open (ADA2O) This course requires students to acvely explore dramac forms and techniques, using their own ideas and concerns as well as sources selected from a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures. Student learning will include idenfying and using the principles of space, me, voice, and movement in creang, sustaining, and communicang authenc roles within a drama. Students will assume responsibility for decisions made in the creaon and presentaon of the drama, and will analyse and reflect on the experience. Prerequisite: None Bawang, CASS, SJD, Elliot Lake, Michipicoten, White Pines, and WC Eaket only Music, Grade 10 Open (AMU2O) This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include parcipang in creave acvies and listening percepvely. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history. Prerequisite: None Bawang, CASS, Elliot Lake, Michipicoten, SJD, WC Eaket, Hornepayne, and White Pines only Guitar, Grade 10 Open (AMG2O) Students will learn a variety of guitar techniques while performing folk and popular songs on the 6-string acousc guitar. Learning how to read music and chord symbols is an important component of this course. Students will learn about the historical development of the guitar by listening to classical, folk, blues, jazz, and rock selecons. Prerequisite: None (Recommended: AMU10) SJD, Korah, and White Pines only Piano Keyboard, Grade 10 Open (AMK2O) This course is for students that have not played the piano before or have some experience. Students work at their own pace while learning to read a variety of styles and learning the basics of synthesizer (sequencer) recording. Advanced students will learn recording techniques using computers, synthesizers and MIDI equipment. Prerequisite: None Bawang only Vocal Music, Grade 10 Open (AMV2O) This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include parcipang in creave acvies and listening percepvely. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history. Aspiring rock stars, opera singers, folk singers and anyone who enjoys singing will benefit from this course which performs primarily in a choir format. Prerequisite: None Korah only Visual Arts, Grade 10 Open (AVI2O) This course emphasizes learning through pracce; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for arsc thinking and experimentaon. Student learning will include the refined applicaon of the elements and principles of design, incorporang the creave and design processes, and the relaonship between form and content. Students will also learn about the connecons between works of art and their historical contexts. Course objecves may be achieved either through a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a parcular art form (e.g., drawing, painng). Prerequisite: None - AVI1O recommended.
