Large Group Acvies / Sport Food and Nutrion (IDC4O)
This course emphasizes regular parcipaon in a variety of enjoyable large group acvies that promote life-long healthy acve
living. Student learning will include the applicaon of movement principles to refine their skills, parcipaon in a variety of large
group/team sport acvies that enhance personal competence, fitness and health, and the examinaon of issues related to healthy
living. Cerficaons may include Level 1 Coaching.
The Food and Nutrion component explores the factors that affect atudes and decisions about food, examines current issues of
body image and food markeng and is grounded in the scienfic study of nutrion. Students will learn how to make informed food
choices and will invesgate our Canadian food heritage and food industries as well as global food issues and sport nutrion. This
course will introduce students to research about athlec skills which are related to food and nutrion. Bawang only
Horculture (IDC4O)
This course lets students develop an understanding of the condions required for plant growth, and the techniques used in
gardening, horculture, landscaping, and forestry. Through research and collaborave group acvies, students invesgate methods
of propagaon, methods of gardening, landscape techniques and the importance of culvated plants to society, the economy, and
the environment. Emphasis is placed on skills related to the workplace and daily life. CASS only
Mathematics
Mathemacs for Work and Everyday Life, Grade 12, Workplace Preparaon (MEL4E)
This course enables students to broaden their understanding of mathemacs as it is applied in the workplace and daily life. Students
will invesgate quesons involving the use of stascs; apply the concept of probability to solve problems involving familiar
situaons; invesgate accommodaon costs and create household budgets; use proporonal reasoning; esmate and measure;
and apply geometric concepts to create designs. Students will consolidate their mathemacal skills as they solve problems and
communicate their thinking. Prerequisite: Mathemacs for Work and Everyday Life, Grade 11, Workplace Preparaon Alexander
Henry, Bawang, CASS, Chapleau, Elliot Lake, Hornepayne, Korah, Michipicoten, SJD, WC Eaket, and White Pines only
Advanced Funcons, Grade 12, University Preparaon (MHF4U)
This course extends students’ experience with funcons. Students will invesgate the properes of polynomial, raonal, logarithmic,
and trigonometric funcons; broaden their understanding of rates of change; and develop facility in applying these concepts and
skills. Students will also refine their use of the mathemacal processes necessary for success in senior mathemacs. This course is
intended both for students who plan to study mathemacs in university and for those wishing to consolidate their understanding
of mathemacs before proceeding to any one of a variety of university programs. Prerequisite: Funcons, Grade 11, University
Preparaon, or Mathemacs for College Technology, Grade 12, College Preparaon All schools except Alexander Henry. Also offered
as part of the French Immersion Program at SJD.
Calculus and Vectors, Grade 12, University Preparaon (MCV4U)
This course builds on students’ previous experience with funcons and their developing understanding of rates of change. Students
will solve problems involving geometric and algebraic representaons of vectors, and representaons of lines and planes in threedimensional
space; broaden their understanding of rates of change to include the derivaves of polynomial, raonal, exponenal,
and sinusoidal funcons; and apply these concepts and skills to the modelling of real-world relaonships. Students will also refine
their use of the mathemacal processes necessary for success in senior mathemacs. This course is intended for students who plan
to study mathemacs in university and who may choose to pursue careers in fields such as physics and engineering. Note: The new
Advanced Funcons can be taken concurrently with or can precede Calculus and Vectors. Prerequisite: Advanced Funcons, Grade 12
University Preparaon. Bawang, CASS, Elliot Lake, Korah, Michipicoten, SJD, WC Eaket, and White Pines. Also offered as part of the
French Immersion Program at SJD.
