Descriptiou.--Leaves linear or capillary, long and slender, undivided<br />
(?) or dichtomously forked. Length $ era. to 5o era.<br />
Judging by <strong>the</strong> extremely poor material at our coramand <strong>the</strong>y<br />
_rew in bundles and were apparently caducous.<br />
<strong>The</strong> genus was established by I-Leer in I876, and its relations<br />
have caused considerable discussion, some authors comparing it<br />
with lsoetes. Both S_:henk and Seward, from <strong>the</strong> stomatal character,<br />
place <strong>the</strong> genus among <strong>the</strong> Gy_nosperms. Among <strong>the</strong><br />
latter it falls most naturally in <strong>the</strong> order Ginkgoales, although<br />
this relationship is disputed ix_.some quarters. It is easemially<br />
a Jurassic type, appearing, however, irt <strong>the</strong> Rhaetie and surviving<br />
as late as <strong>the</strong> Upper Cretaceous, apparently becoming extinct in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Ceuomanian, <strong>the</strong> European C,_ekanoatsleia _erz_os_ Heer,<br />
which is recorded by Fontaine I from <strong>the</strong> Lowi_r Cretaceous <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Black Hills, ranging from <strong>the</strong> Aptian throngh <strong>the</strong> Alhian<br />
into <strong>the</strong> Cenomanian <strong>of</strong> Portugal.<br />
