Description..--Leaves narrow, linear-lanceolate in outline,<br />

equally pointed at <strong>the</strong> apex and base, short petioted, ranging from<br />

5 cm. to IO em. in length and from 8 ram. to 13 ram. in width.<br />

Margins entire, M_drib stout below, tapering above, usually<br />

somewhat flexuous. Secondaries more or less remote, abo_t Io<br />

alternate pairs, branching fron_ <strong>the</strong> midrib at angles varying from<br />

35 ° to 45 °, eamptodrome, <strong>of</strong> fine calibre and <strong>of</strong>ten obsolete.<br />

This species was described by <strong>New</strong>berry ir_ 1868 from <strong>the</strong><br />

Dakota Group. Lesquereux in his Flora <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dakota Group<br />

makes it one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> varieties <strong>of</strong> his Sali.v prote_eyolia, but it is<br />

obviously entitled to independent specific rank. It has not heret<strong>of</strong>ore<br />

been known from <strong>the</strong> Rarltan formation, but is found to be<br />

sparingly represented in <strong>the</strong> Upper beds at South Amboy. It is<br />

pre-eminently a species which characterizes <strong>the</strong> Magothy and<br />

allied formati_as from Marthas Vineyard to Alabama, being<br />

especially abundant in <strong>New</strong> Jersey and Maryland,<br />

Occurrence.--South Amboy.<br />

Descriptio_._I_aves broadly laneeNate in outline, <strong>of</strong>ten unsymmetrical,<br />

large, petiolate. Length about 13 cm, and breadth<br />

at <strong>the</strong> widest part, which is toward <strong>the</strong> base, about 3 cm. Base<br />

rounded and obtuse. Apex narrowed and acute. 'Texture<br />

smooth and thin. Midrib slender, somewhat curved. Secondaries<br />

remote, branching from <strong>the</strong> midrib at an angle <strong>of</strong> 45 ° and<br />

curving upward in parallel courses, camptodrome,<br />
