FILICALES. 73<br />

Descriptio_.--"O. spica fertili elongata, sporangiis distichis,<br />

ovalibus granulatis, I_ ram. longls." Heer, i88<strong>3.</strong><br />

This species described originally by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Heer from <strong>the</strong><br />

Patoot beds <strong>of</strong> Greenland and compared with <strong>the</strong> fertile frond<br />

<strong>of</strong> Ophioglossum vulgatu_.'has been founcl in considerable numbers<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> clays, although Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>New</strong>berry failed<br />

to indicate <strong>the</strong> exact localities. <strong>The</strong>re can be no question <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

identity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Greenland and <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> Jersey material. <strong>The</strong><br />

reference to Ophioglossum is not so conclusive, and many<br />

students will echo <strong>New</strong>berry's supposition that <strong>the</strong>se remains are<br />

those <strong>of</strong> staminate cones <strong>of</strong> some species <strong>of</strong> conifer. Since no<br />

new light can be shed on <strong>the</strong>ir systematic position, <strong>the</strong>y are retained<br />

where Heer and <strong>New</strong>berry placed <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Occurrence.--Locality unknown.<br />
