2_ THE RARITAN FLORA.<br />

we find <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> <strong>flora</strong> more complex and modern in its composition<br />

than any known Albian <strong>flora</strong>; for example, dicotyledons<br />

make up 68_ <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> <strong>flora</strong>, while not a single dicotyledon<br />

is known from <strong>the</strong> English Oault, and <strong>the</strong> representation <strong>of</strong> this<br />

group <strong>of</strong> plants in <strong>the</strong> Albian <strong>of</strong> France and Spain is very meager<br />

indeed, and comparable to <strong>the</strong> display <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se plants in <strong>the</strong><br />

Patapsco formation <strong>of</strong> Maryland and Virginia, <strong>the</strong> latter showing<br />

a striking parallelism with <strong>the</strong> Albian <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dd world, xxfith<br />

at least one identical species and closely allied representatives<br />

in several identical genera.<br />
