Description,--Leaves, small, elliptical to ovate or ovateqaneeolate<br />

in outline, coriaceons in texture, varying from 2.5 cm. to 6<br />

era, in length by 1.8 era. to 3,2 cm. in breadth. Margins entire,<br />

occasionally slightly undulate. Apex rounded or obtusely<br />

acuminate. Base rounded, sub-truncate or ctmeate, Petiole<br />

stout, from .7 cm. to 2 cm. in ler_gth, conspicuously alate. <strong>The</strong><br />

petiolar wings may be oblong4auceolate in outline or obovate,<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are from 2. 8 ram. to 5 ram. in width, averaging<br />

about <strong>3.</strong>5 mm. Midrib stout. Secondaries flue, more or less<br />

obscured by <strong>the</strong> eoriaceous'leaf substance, about 9 alternate pairs,<br />

branching from <strong>the</strong> midrib at angles <strong>of</strong> from 45° to 5o°, parallel,<br />

camptodrome.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se curious leaves were described by LesqueretL_: from <strong>the</strong><br />

Dakota Group as a species <strong>of</strong> Ficus and compared with Fieus<br />

bmnelloides Etting's,, and Ficus m_dgei Lesq., nei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> which<br />

has alate petioles, while <strong>the</strong> first has an emarginate apex, Subsequently<br />

<strong>the</strong>. same leaves were found in <strong>the</strong> Magothy formation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> Jersey, and only recently a single small leaf was found<br />

in <strong>the</strong> upper <strong>Raritan</strong> beds at South Am'boy. <strong>The</strong>y exhibit considerable<br />

variability in outline, but all have exactly <strong>the</strong> same<br />

aspect and conspicuous atate petiole. <strong>The</strong>y appear to be related<br />

to <strong>the</strong> leaves <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> modern genus Cftrua. <strong>The</strong> latter have ex-<br />
