Description.--"C. foliis parvulis, membranaceis, eliipticis,<br />

crenatis, nervis secundariis _umerosis, valde camptodromis, reticulato<br />

venosis." Heer, i88<strong>3.</strong><br />

Leaves very vari@ble in size, 2 cm. to 8 cm. in length by i cm.<br />

to 5 era. in breadth, ovate or elliptlcal in outline, broadly rounded<br />

above, narrowed and inequilateral below. Margins entire below,<br />

coarsely too<strong>the</strong>d above with somewhat variable rounded, crenate<br />

or crenate-dentate teeth. Occasional specimens are entire<br />

throughout and some have a markedly inequilateral base. Midrib<br />

mediumly stout. Secondaries numerous, 9 to Io pairs, subopposite,<br />

branching from <strong>the</strong> midrib at an angle somewhat in<br />

excess <strong>of</strong> 45 °, slightly curved upward and p_rallel, branching"<br />

near <strong>the</strong> margin to form, festoons from which branches enter <strong>the</strong><br />

marginal teeth.<br />

Tills species was described by Hjeer from <strong>the</strong> Patoot beds <strong>of</strong><br />

Greenland, and unfortunately only a single small leaf was figured.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> leaves, which are abundant, grade into much larger<br />

forms, which are also present in <strong>the</strong> Bladen formation <strong>of</strong> North<br />

Carolina an¢ <strong>the</strong> Tuscaloosa formation <strong>of</strong> Alabama.<br />
