and slender far such large leaves, 12 to, 15 pairs, branching<br />

from<br />

<strong>the</strong> midrib at nag'los <strong>of</strong> 45 _ or slightly more, somewhat flexuous<br />

and iregular in <strong>the</strong>ir course, camptodrome. Tertiaries generally<br />

transverse, forming a coarsely quadrangular areolation.<br />

This species is quite variable, not only in size, but especially in<br />

marginal characters, which show every gradation from nearly<br />

entire forms to closely serrate forms; this is, however, a character<br />

which is more or less variable in. all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> species<br />

<strong>of</strong> this genus. This is a, very .distinct species, however, its<br />

nearest ally apparently being C¢Icctroptly]lu_ lanceolc_tum, described<br />

by Ettingshausen from <strong>the</strong> Cretaceous <strong>of</strong> Saxony, 1 and<br />

which Heer apparently recognized in his Greenland material, z<br />

Numerous specimens from <strong>New</strong> Jersey are irL <strong>New</strong>berry's<br />

_ollection, but none have <strong>the</strong> locality labels preserved. Two<br />

specimens were obtained in recent collections from Milltown.<br />

Description.--Leaves small, 4 cm. to 5 cm. in len_h, by 1.2<br />

era. to 1.5 cm. in breadth, lanceolate, or in some specimens somewhat<br />

spatnlate in outline. Apex subacute. Base somewhat<br />

decurrent and straight sided. Margins entire below, denticnlate<br />

above. Midrib stout. Secondaries numerous, somewhat irregular,<br />

<strong>of</strong> fine calibre but prominent, eamptodrome.<br />

This species is clearly distinct {rom Celastropl_yllum spat_-<br />

la_htm <strong>New</strong>b., altbough it stands nearer <strong>the</strong> latter tharL to any<br />
