Europe. It is quite probable that it is composite, hut no certain<br />

grounds for segregation are apparent.<br />

While some students may doubt <strong>the</strong> wisdom <strong>of</strong> correlating<br />

<strong>the</strong>se Upper Cretaceous forms with a species which is essentially<br />

a Jurassic type, specific differe_ltion founded merely upori stratigraphy<br />

has gone astray so <strong>of</strong>ten that in cases like <strong>the</strong> present<br />

syn<strong>the</strong>sis may well precede analysis, and it might be added that<br />

this was <strong>the</strong> view taken by Holliek 1 with reference to material<br />

from Glen Cove, Long Island., and by Velenovsky _ in. studying<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cenomanian <strong>flora</strong> <strong>of</strong> Bohemia.<br />

This was <strong>the</strong> first fossil plant from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> which received<br />

a specific name, having been described and figured by Conrad in<br />

1869, who, however, failed to perceive its identity with <strong>the</strong><br />

Podoza_ites lanceolatus <strong>of</strong> European authors.<br />

As found in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaflets are detached, lanceolate in<br />

outline, pointed at both ends and widest near <strong>the</strong> base. Length<br />

about 7 cm., and width about 8 ram.<br />

Occurrence.--Woodbridge, along South River (Conrad).<br />
