<strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> and a single, poorly defined leaf is referred to Acer<br />
from <strong>the</strong> insular Cretaceous <strong>flora</strong>. This absence <strong>of</strong> foliar remains<br />
suggests that <strong>the</strong>se remains are more properly comparable<br />
with <strong>the</strong> winged seeds <strong>of</strong> corfifers like those <strong>of</strong> Pimps, leaves <strong>of</strong><br />
which are common in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> formation. Judged by <strong>the</strong><br />
modern representatives <strong>the</strong>y are much more like Acer than Pious<br />
or o<strong>the</strong>r conifers, and <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>the</strong>refore retained in <strong>the</strong> genus<br />
where <strong>the</strong>y were placed by Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>New</strong>berry.<br />
In addition to specimens from Woudbridge and South Amboy,<br />
undoubtedly similar specimens are recorded from Marthas<br />
Vineyard.<br />

Descriptio_.--Leaves small, ovate in outline, 1.9 crn• or 2 cm.<br />
in len_h and I.* cm. or L2 cm. ir_ greatest breadth, which is at<br />
<strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaf, Apex rounded. Base enneate, slightly<br />
decu,rrent to <strong>the</strong> extrernely short and stout petiole. Venation<br />
fine. Secondaries, few, 4 or 5 pairs, subopposite; <strong>the</strong> lower diverge<br />
at an acute angle and run parallel with <strong>the</strong> margin; <strong>the</strong><br />
upper are much. shorter and more oblique; all camptodrome.<br />
This species is based on <strong>the</strong> single specimen figured in Pro£<br />
<strong>New</strong>berry's monograph (loc. cit) and no additional examples<br />
