8o THE RARITAN FLORA.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se fruits always occur detached and are present it/ considerable<br />

abundance at Woodbridge, but have not been detected<br />

from o<strong>the</strong>r localities in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong>. Similar remains are recorded<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Tuscaloosa formation <strong>of</strong> Alabama, and <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

also present in <strong>the</strong> Blader_ formation <strong>of</strong> North Carolina. As<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir name indicates <strong>the</strong>y are assumed to represent <strong>the</strong> fruit <strong>of</strong><br />

some contemporaneous species <strong>of</strong> cycad.<br />

Scale-like organisms from I era. to 2 cm. or possibly more in<br />

length, rounded distally and showing in some specimens a but<br />

slightly emphasized apieulate point. Greatly expanded laterally<br />

in <strong>the</strong> upper part to a breadth reaching 2. 5 cm., abruptly contracted<br />

at about <strong>the</strong> middle to a cuneate or straight-margined<br />
