Description.--Leaves small, 3 an,. to 4 cm. in length by 1,4 cm.<br />
to 3 cm. in breadth, ovate to broadly spatulate in outline. Apex<br />
rounded m_re or less broadly. Base narrowed and decurrent.<br />
Margins entire below, dentate _bove, <strong>the</strong> teeth usually confined<br />
to <strong>the</strong> apical third <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> leaf, Midrib usually somewhat curved,<br />
giving <strong>the</strong> leaves an unsymmetrical appearance. Secondaries<br />
6 to 8 pairs, branching from <strong>the</strong> midrib at an acute angle, curving<br />
slightly upward, camptodrome.<br />
<strong>The</strong> more narrow forms were separated from <strong>the</strong> broader<br />
form,s by Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>New</strong>berry, both being given specific rank, although<br />
it seems obvious that <strong>the</strong>y a.re <strong>the</strong> variable extremes <strong>of</strong><br />
a single species, and that not an especially variable one. <strong>The</strong>y<br />
approach ra<strong>the</strong>r closely to Cdastrophyllum Brittonianu4n` Hotlick,<br />
but are readily distinguishable by <strong>the</strong>ir less symmetrical shape<br />
and narrower base, <strong>the</strong>ir coarser an& less numerous teeth, and<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir usually more numerous, more ascending, and straighter<br />
secondaries.<br />
No localities for this species are given i_ Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>New</strong>berry's<br />
Monograph. Later collections show. it to be abundant in <strong>the</strong><br />
upper <strong>Raritan</strong> at South Amgoy.<br />
