_Descriptiom--Leaflets, elliptical in outline, <strong>3.</strong>2 era. to 4 cm.<br />

in length, by L5 cm. to 1.7 era. in greatest breadth, which is<br />

abo_t half way between <strong>the</strong> apex and <strong>the</strong> base. Texture sub_<br />

eoriaceous. Apex ra<strong>the</strong>r broadly rounded. Base slightly narrowed<br />

and decurrent to <strong>the</strong> point o'{ attachment. Lesquereux<br />

•speaks <strong>of</strong> a short petiole, but this is lackitag in his type figm-e<br />

and in all <strong>the</strong> specimens examined by <strong>the</strong> writer. <strong>The</strong> midrib<br />

is not especially wide, but is quite prominent. <strong>The</strong> secondaries<br />

are thin and alternate; <strong>the</strong>y l_umber about six pairs, and branch<br />

fron_ <strong>the</strong> midrib at angles <strong>of</strong> 50° or somewhat less, curving up-<br />

,yard close to <strong>the</strong> nmrgins, camptodrome.<br />

This species was described originally from <strong>the</strong> Dakota Group<br />

<strong>of</strong> Kansas. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> leaf is very close to <strong>the</strong> type, differing<br />

merely in that <strong>the</strong> outline is more nearly elliptical than it is in<br />

"<strong>the</strong> western form. Pro{. <strong>New</strong>berry failed to reec_rd <strong>the</strong> locality<br />

from. which his specimens were obtained and no subsequent material<br />

has come to light from <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> Jersey clays.<br />
