26 THE RARITAN FLORA.<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se identical species, and it is quite likely that some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

species credited to South Amboy, on <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>New</strong>berry,<br />

may really have come from within <strong>the</strong> Magothy formation,<br />

since <strong>the</strong> Morgan locality, which is <strong>of</strong> Magothy age, would<br />

not have been kept distinct from South A_nboy as a place name<br />

in Pr<strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong>berry's" day. <strong>The</strong> following table <strong>of</strong> distribution<br />

gives in detail <strong>the</strong> geological and geographical distribution <strong>of</strong><br />

all <strong>the</strong> species known to occur in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> formation at <strong>the</strong><br />

present time. <strong>The</strong> species found recorded, from "near Keyport,"<br />

in Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>New</strong>berry's report, are all excluded, as this outcrop is<br />

now known to be <strong>of</strong> I_lagothy age, while <strong>the</strong> Tiliaephylhu_ recorded<br />

from Fish House is now known to be Pleistocene. As<br />

previously mentioned, no account is taken <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> determinations<br />

<strong>of</strong> Lesquereux, published in <strong>the</strong> Clay Report <strong>of</strong> J878, since <strong>the</strong><br />

material was so unreliable and embraced a number <strong>of</strong> forms<br />

which would be most<br />

unlikely to occur in <strong>the</strong>se beds.<br />
