Descr{ptio_.--Indefinit_ <strong>flora</strong>lorfruit-remains <strong>of</strong>variablesize.<br />

2. 5 cm. to 4 cm. long, by 2. 5 cm. to 3 cm. in diameter, cylindrical,<br />

apparently cupshaped, and with a siml_Ie margin, whick may be<br />

slightly expanded or contracted; narrawing below to a comparatively<br />

slender peduncle. Base and peduncle apparently covered<br />

with scales or small bracts, although <strong>the</strong> preser_'ation is such that<br />

this is ra<strong>the</strong>r inferential.<br />

'Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>New</strong>berry sees in <strong>the</strong>se objects a not altoge<strong>the</strong>r obvious<br />

resemblance to Williamsonia cretacea tleer. <strong>The</strong>), may be related<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Cycadales, but this supposition is far from positive,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>y are retained in <strong>the</strong> genus to. which Pro,f. <strong>New</strong>berry<br />

referred <strong>the</strong>m, ra<strong>the</strong>r than make a change based upon <strong>the</strong> slender<br />

evidence available. <strong>The</strong>y are said to be common in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong>,<br />

several specimens havinK been fig'ured by <strong>the</strong>ir describer, who<br />

failed, ho.wever, to record <strong>the</strong> exact localky, and no new material<br />

is contained in tbe more recent <strong>Raritan</strong> collections. '<br />

Description.--Fructifications consisting <strong>of</strong> a long and stout<br />

peduncle preserved for a len_h o{ 2 cm. to 3 cm. and about 7<br />

cm. in diameter, expanding distally into a discoid conical receptacle,<br />

<strong>the</strong> edge <strong>of</strong> which is surm_u}_ted by IO-to 2o lanceolate<br />

bracts I. 5 era. to 3-5 cm. in length and 2 ram. to IO ram. in<br />

diameter, <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> a very durable consistency.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se objects are present in considerable abundance in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong><br />

days, and Pr<strong>of</strong>. <strong>New</strong>berry figures a number <strong>of</strong> specimens,<br />

although be neglects to mention <strong>the</strong> localities from which tbey<br />
