RARITAN FORMATION--CORRELATION. _5<br />

which make <strong>the</strong>ir first appearance in <strong>the</strong> Patapseo. <strong>The</strong>se are<br />

Aralia, Celastrophyllurn, Cissites, Eucalyptus and. Ficus. <strong>The</strong><br />

genus Celccstrophyllum, with a large display oh forms in both<br />

<strong>the</strong> Patapsco and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong>, has one identical species, C. Brittonianum<br />

Hollick, while C. Hun,teri <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> former is' very close<br />

and ancestral, if not actually identical, with C. au_ustifo[i_m<br />

<strong>New</strong>b. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong>.<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> conifers <strong>the</strong> widespread Widdrb_gtonites ramosus<br />

(Font.) Berry, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Patapsco, is closely related, if not identical,<br />

with <strong>the</strong> equally common _Viddringtonites Reichii (Ettings.)<br />

Heer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> and succeeding formations. <strong>The</strong> genus<br />

Frenelopsis has closely related species in both, while Sequoia and<br />

Thuyites have already been mentioned as well as <strong>the</strong> cycadean<br />

genus Podosamites which extends back to <strong>the</strong> Triassic. Two<br />

<strong>Raritan</strong> species are recorded from <strong>the</strong> European Albian. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

are Sequoia Reiche**bachi (Gein.) Heer and Eucalyptus aTcgusta<br />

Velen., <strong>the</strong> former a very wide ranging form and <strong>the</strong> latter recorded<br />

from <strong>the</strong> Albian <strong>of</strong> Portugal and <strong>the</strong> Cenomanian <strong>of</strong><br />

Bohemia.<br />

Turning to <strong>the</strong> elements in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> <strong>flora</strong> which ally it with<br />

younger <strong>flora</strong>s, we find that 6 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> species persist as<br />

late as <strong>the</strong> Senonian <strong>of</strong> Europe, and 15 are found in <strong>the</strong><br />

Patoot beds <strong>of</strong> Greenland., which are also usually regarded as<br />

<strong>of</strong> Senonian age. All but 4 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se are, however, found in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Cenomanian beds <strong>of</strong> that country, and practically all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs and those from_ <strong>the</strong> Seno.nian <strong>of</strong> Europe as well, occur<br />

somewhere in Ceuomanian strata. <strong>The</strong>re are 34 species common<br />

to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> <strong>flora</strong> and that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dakota Group, <strong>the</strong> former<br />

lacking more particularly <strong>the</strong> numerous,forms <strong>of</strong> Betula, Quercus,<br />

Plata¢zus, etc., which characterize <strong>the</strong> latter. <strong>The</strong>re are 3_<br />

species common to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> and to <strong>the</strong> Atane beds <strong>of</strong><br />

Greenland, <strong>the</strong> latter formation being usually regarded as Cenomanian<br />

in age, and <strong>the</strong>re are 67 species common to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong><br />

and Magothy <strong>flora</strong>s, although <strong>the</strong>se latter figures are somewhat<br />

obscured by <strong>the</strong> difficulty ef determining <strong>the</strong> probable age <strong>of</strong><br />

many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> species recorded from Long Island and o<strong>the</strong>r areas<br />

in <strong>the</strong> vicinity <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> terminal moraine and by <strong>the</strong> additional<br />

fact that <strong>the</strong> Upper Raritau at South Amboy _urnished many<br />
