could have been derived. It would seem that <strong>the</strong> conclusion is<br />
reasonable that <strong>the</strong>se are <strong>the</strong> normal leaves <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earliest known<br />
Comptonias, and that <strong>the</strong> modern seedling leaves are truly ata-<br />
•vistic.<br />
<strong>The</strong> remains <strong>of</strong> this species are scanty, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Raritan</strong> occurrence<br />
being based on a single specimen, and all are very similar to <strong>the</strong><br />
contemporaneous Comptonia an_iq_¢a Nilsson, described about<br />
se_enty-five years ago from .Sweden.<br />
