Descriptio_,--Capsules broadly ovate in outline and elliptical<br />
in cross-section, 5 ram. to g ram. in length, by 3 ram. to, 6 ram.<br />
in breadth, apl_rently 5-chambered and dehiscing at <strong>the</strong> apex.<br />
Before dehiscence <strong>the</strong> apex appears sharply pointed, .afterward<br />
<strong>the</strong> fossils, as preserved, show from 2 to 5 sharp teeth.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se capsules occur singly, sometimes attached to a ra<strong>the</strong>r stout<br />
peduncle, in o<strong>the</strong>r instances <strong>the</strong>y are preserved in pairs, and<br />
<strong>New</strong>berry figures one specimen (loc. cir, _. I9) in which <strong>the</strong><br />
capsule-bearing branches are apparently dlcho_omously arranged.<br />
<strong>The</strong>se objects occur in considerable abundance at Woodbridge,<br />
N, J., and <strong>the</strong>y are also recorded, by Hollick, from Gay Head,<br />
Marthas Vineyard. <strong>The</strong>ir botanical affinity is unknown.<br />

Descril_tion,.--Fruits obovate to elliptical in outline, I cm. to<br />
I. 5 cm_.in length, by 0.6 era. to I cm,. in breadth, attacl;.ed to a<br />
stout peduncle, I era. long, in one specimen. Ornamented with<br />
a corona <strong>of</strong> prickle-like spines, in various states <strong>of</strong> preservation,<br />
sometimes complete, tapering and sharply pointed, about 2.5 ram.<br />
