those from Glen Cove may have been originally from <strong>the</strong> Magothy<br />

formation, although <strong>the</strong>y are probably <strong>Raritan</strong>,<br />

'2)escriptio_&.--Leaves broadly lanceolate in outline and<br />

eoriaceous in texture. Nine cm..to 15 cm. in length, by t.8 cm,<br />

to 3 cm. in width, <strong>the</strong> minimum ra<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong> maximum being<br />

<strong>the</strong> usual dimensions. Apex more extendcgt than <strong>the</strong> base,<br />

obtusely pointed. Base cuneate, acute. Midrib stout, as is <strong>the</strong><br />

short petiole• Secondaries fine, usually obsolete, I2 to 15 pairs,<br />

snbequat, alternate, brmtehing from <strong>the</strong> midrib at an angle <strong>of</strong><br />

about 45 ° and curving upward, cam_Xodrolne. Leaf surface<br />

noticeably smooth.<br />

This species, _,vhieh came originally from <strong>the</strong> Woodbridge<br />

locality, where it is eormnon, is equally common at Milltown.<br />

It appears to be confined to <strong>the</strong> <strong>New</strong> Jersey <strong>Raritan</strong>, and suggests<br />

somewhat <strong>the</strong> leaves w0aich have been referred to Laurus<br />

ph_tonia. Heer, from which it may be distinguished in <strong>the</strong> absence<br />

<strong>of</strong> venation by its texture.<br />
