Taji Location CommandDuring our visit to the Taji National Depot the assessment team inquired about thecurrent use of the airfield and its potential for including fixed wing to increase its use.Senior leaders within the Taji Location Command and U.S. military representativesconfirmed that the airfield was capable of sustaining fixed wing cargo operations, andthat limited Iraqi C-130 aircraft operations had been recently conducted at the airfield.Despite the clear demonstration of the capability to stage and move logistics supplies viafixed wing operations from the airfield, neither the U.S. nor Iraqi Army representativeswe interviewed were aware of any plans for the airfield to be used as a major Aerial Portof Debarkation/Aerial Port of Embarkation hub in support of future Iraqi Army logisticsoperations. The assessment team also noted the existence of a rail spur at Taji that connected to aninternational single track railroad originating in Basra and terminating in Beirut,Lebanon. In addition to use of the airfield for fixed wing, establishing a rail logisticscapability to support Taji, thus coupling air and rail capability, would greatly enhance itscapacity as a strategic and operational logistics distribution hub for the Iraqi Army.Recommendations, Client Comments, and OurResponse10.a. We recommend that Commander, Multi-National Security Transition Command-Iraq, in conjunction with the Iraqi Ministry of Defense and the Iraqi Joint Headquarters, study the feasibility of certifying the Taji Airfield for fixed wing logistics supportoperations to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of logistics distribution for theIraqi Army.Client CommentsCommander, MNSTC-I concurred, reporting that MNF-I had begun efforts to certify TajiAirfield for fixed wing cargo operations.
