The intention <strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> an approach <strong>to</strong> aspects of my au<strong>to</strong>biography in a multi-layered way. Forth<strong>is</strong> reason, it might have been appropriate <strong>to</strong> constitute th<strong>is</strong> as a 'single case' study method (seeYin, 1994). However, given the detail necessary <strong>to</strong> achieve meaningfulness, it has been decided<strong>to</strong> extract five illustrative moments from the au<strong>to</strong>biography around which <strong>to</strong> structure t<strong>here</strong>flexive process <strong>and</strong> thus <strong>to</strong> adapt extensively case study methods.Whilst au<strong>to</strong>/biographic research methodology <strong>is</strong> becoming increasingly used in researchprojects, knowledge of it <strong>is</strong> confined <strong>to</strong> a relatively small, though growing academic community(See e.g. the European Network for Life H<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry Research), <strong>and</strong> so it seems important <strong>to</strong> outlineits origins <strong>and</strong> provenance. Arguably its origins are within the philosophical tradition ofphenomenology the architect of which would appear <strong>to</strong> be Edmund Husserl (1970).
