Appendix 6 - IM5 – 2006Involvement with the TTRB brought me into contact with many other professionals working atthe interface between technology and Education. Preparatory work for the validation of an MAin E-Learning enabled me to research the field with a view to providing an appropriate academiccontext in which to set this new programme. Development work with Hibernia College inDublin, Ireland on a completely online initial teacher education programme and my ongoingwork as Director of Learning and Teaching with ICT also drove my sustained analysis of thetools available for teacher education. At this time, the TDA were providing extensive grants toFaculties of Education (HEI providers of ITT) as a strategic attempt to ‘raise the bar’ of teacherengagement with technology.Post-NOF 85 discussions had resulted in the view that one needed to crack the issue of access totechnology before moving on to increase levels of participation and engagement. An outcome ofthis analysis was the rolling out of funding to HEIs to procure new and innovative technologies.I managed a sequence of such projects which I termed JANUS 86 , on behalf of the Faculty whichmeant engaging with a range of key stakeholders. A vocal minority of the staff were keenenthusiasts of Apple Macintosh Computers. They argued that Microsoft only environmentswere creating unhealthy monopolies in schools and that, the tools provided by Apple were more‘cool’, more ‘innovative’ and potentially more ‘creative’. It was decided, therefore to purchase anumber of ‘macs’ and explore their possibilities for learning and teaching. One of the attractions of the ‘mac’ was its bundling together of software tools into the productsuite iLife. The adoption of the prefix ‘i’ to everything that Apple did, may have been aconscious commercial ploy on their part to move away from the ‘e’ of contemporary wordsmithingas a signifier of anything driven Electronically. Most famously, and now regarded asiconic of the early years of the 21 st Century, was the prefixing of the ‘i’ to Pod in the branding of360Simon Hughes Ph.D. Thesis (October 2012)
